Robert and Helen Singleton

The Singletons are available to speak on their Freedom Ride experience and its meaning for civic engagement by today’s activist.

In 1961 Bob and Helen joined the Freedom Rides to test Southern states’ compliance with interstate travel freedom. On July 30 they were arrested in Jackson, Miss, charged with “Breach of Peace” and were subsequently incarcerated at Parchman Penitentiary with more than 300 other Freedom Riders. These events led to new regulations enforcing the Supreme Court’s decisions and gradually changing society and policy in America.
